1. Who: thay cho người
Ex:
- Subject: the man who phoned me works in my office. (he phoned me)
- Object: the man who you met works in my office. (you met him)
2. Whom: thay cho người
Ex:
- Object: the man whom you saw is Kate’s boyfriend. (you saw him)
Chú ý: whom có thể thay thế bằng who/that
3. Which: thay cho vật
Ex:
- Subject: the car which hit my car belongs to John. (it hit my car)
- Object: the car which my car hit belongs to John. (my car hit it)
4. That: thay cho người, vật hoặc loài vật
Ex:
- Subject:
+ Kate is the girl that told me about you. (she told me about you)
+ This is the dog that big my son. (it bit my son)
- Object:
+ Kate is the girl that I was telling you about. (I was telling you about her)
+ This is the dog that my son kicked. (my son kicked it)
5. Whose: thay cho người, vật hoặc loài vật
Có ý nghĩa sở hữu ‘của ai: of whom/of which’
Ex:
- This is the woman whose son won the prize. (her son)
- He drove a car whose windshield was broken. (its windshield)
6. Where: thay từ chỉ nơi chốn
Có ý nghĩa như: ‘at/in/on/which’
Ex:
- He showed me the house where he used to live. (=in which)
- This is the place where the plane crashed. (=at which)
7. When: thay từ chỉ thời gian
Có ý nghĩa như: ‘on/at which’
Ex:
- I still remember the day when we first met. (=on which)
- He came at a time when everybody was asleep. (=at which)
8. Why: chỉ lý do
Có ý nghĩa như: ‘for which’
Ex: I don’t know the reason why she avoided me. (=for which)
Chú ý: why thường được dung sau từ reason
9. What: thay cho một điều nào đó
Có ý nghĩa: ‘the thing that’
Ex:
- I don’t know what she wants. (the thing that she wants)
- What I want now is a cup of coffee. (The thing that I want now)
